Langlee was developed in the 1960s and early 1970s as part of a “building for the future programme” in the Borders region. The aim was to move away from the traditional border market towns which provided limited opportunities for young people to a focus on new opportunities for trade and industry and to encourage young people to stay in the area. Langlee was part of a vision for Central Borders development, a government backed scheme to expand Borders population by a third and create a linked “city in a rural setting” encompassing employment, services and homes. A lot of additional employment was expected from businesses to be located in Easter Langlee.
Designing The Future of Upper Langlee
In 2017 Scottish Borders Council and Waverley Housing launched a joint master planning project to look at future options for the housing stock that Waverley own in Beech Avenue, Hawthorn Road, Larch Grove and Laurel Grove, Galashiels.
The Beginning of the Regeneration of Langlee
Refurbishment of 68 flats and maisonettes on the estate was completed. This included energy efficiency works including external wall insulation, new flat entrance doors, replacement or refurbishment of door entry systems, and internal decoration and refurbishment of the stairwells.
During 2022 a big milestone was achieved with the demolition of 99 flats and 74 garages.
New Build – The focus of the programme has now shifted toward the new build element. Getting to this stage has taken a lot of time and energy, but it is anticipated that construction of new homes can begin as planned in 2023.
