#ScotAppWeek18 – Jack McDonald – Apprentice Painter & Decorator – My Apprenticeship Story

I left school after 4th year and wasn’t sure what I wanted to do but did know I wanted to work in a hands-on job.  My friends were going to Borders College so I signed up too and attended for one year to learn about joinery.  However, I didn’t really enjoy this so in my second year I switched to painting and decorating which I did enjoy.

I applied for an apprenticeship at Waverley and I am now in my third year of my four year apprenticeship. I find that I am learning new things all the time and I am really enjoying the apprenticeship and of course it has the added bonus of that I am getting paid while I learn!

I have also attended college on day release throughout my apprenticeship and this helps me to consolidate the skills required to become successful in my chosen profession. I also opted to do an advanced craft course at the college this year to learn and gain as many skills as possible.

I am lucky that my mentor at Waverley Housing has been very supportive and has helped me learn the skills I need to be successful as a painter and decorator.

I have not thought too far ahead about my future but who knows when I finish my apprenticeship you may see my name on the side of a van when my painting and decorating business gets off the ground!
